For a simple 5-page business website, the fixed part of website maintenance cost is about $130 to $170 a year. That covers a domain plus a hosting or builder plan at renewal prices, checked September 2026. Everything above that pays for someone's time, and the monthly maintenance plans we checked ran from $89 to $350 a month and up.
What website maintenance actually covers
"Maintenance" is a bundle. A few parts are bills you can't skip. The rest is labor, and labor is where prices move. Split any quote into these pieces before you compare:
- A domain name (your web address), renewed every year.
- Hosting: the server your site runs on, or your plan on a website builder.
- An SSL certificate, which keeps browsers from labeling your site "Not Secure".
- Backups you can restore, and security scans for malware.
- Software updates for WordPress, themes and plugins. Hosted builders handle these themselves.
- Edits and support, like changing a price, adding a service or fixing a contact form that stopped sending.
The first three are cheap. The last three cost time, either yours or someone else's.
What each piece costs (checked September 2026)
These prices come from public pricing pages we read in September 2026. We list them as examples and don't rank the companies. Promotions change often, and some sites show different prices depending on where you visit from.
| Item | Typical cost | Data points (checked September 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Domain renewal (.com) | $11 to $35 a year | Porkbun lists .com at $11.08 a year. Network Solutions lists $9.99 for the first year, renewing at $34.99. |
| Shared hosting | About $10 to $11 a month at renewal | Hostinger Premium: $2.99 a month on a 48-month prepay, renews at $10.99. Bluehost Starter: $3.99 a month on a 36-month term, renews at $9.99. |
| SSL certificate | $0 in most cases | Let's Encrypt gives trusted certificates at zero cost. Both hosting plans above include free SSL. |
| Backups | Often included with hosting | Hostinger lists free weekly backups on Premium and daily backups on higher plans. |
| Security service | Optional | Sucuri's Basic Platform costs $229 a year. |
| Updates and monitoring (WordPress) | $0 if you do it yourself | WP Buffs Maintain: $89 a month for weekly updates, backups, uptime monitoring and emergency support. |
| Edits and support | Hourly, or bundled into a plan | WebFX bills additional services at $150 an hour. WP Buffs Protect includes unlimited edits for $179 a month. |
One more data point for labor: the median pay for web developers and digital designers was $47.85 an hour in 2025, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's what employees earn. A freelancer's rate also has to cover their own taxes, software and slow weeks.
Hosting: intro price vs. renewal price
The big number on a hosting page is usually an introductory price that requires paying for years upfront. The renewal price sits in smaller print.
Hostinger's Premium plan shows $2.99 a month. You get that by paying $143.52 for 48 months. After that it renews at $10.99 a month, which is $131.88 a year. Bluehost's Starter plan shows $3.99 a month for a 36-month term, then renews at $9.99 a month, or $119.88 a year.
Intro pricing is normal in hosting. Budget with the renewal price, because that's what you pay once the first term ends.
Domain renewal, and what a lapsed domain costs
A .com costs about $11 to $35 a year at the two registrars we checked. The wholesale price is rising a little. Verisign, which runs .com, is raising it from $10.26 to $10.97 a year on November 1, 2026.
Forgetting to renew costs more. In our research on 1,000 trade business websites (September 2026), 111 of the 898 website addresses we could check (12.4%) no longer resolved at all. That usually means the domain wasn't renewed or its DNS settings broke. We loaded each homepage once, and a listed address can be out of date. For a customer who clicks it, the result is the same: a dead end.
Registrars have to email you at least twice before a domain expires, about a month and about a week ahead. Those emails go to the contact on the registration. If that's an old address, or the person who built your site years ago, you won't see them. Turn on auto-renew and keep the domain in your business's name.
What monthly maintenance plans include, and what costs extra
Most website maintenance services sell the same core: software updates, backups, uptime monitoring and some security. The price gap between plans comes mostly from how much of a person's time they include, especially for edits.
The public plans we looked at show the split. WP Buffs charges $89 a month for updates, backups and emergency support, and $179 a month for the tier with unlimited edits. WebFX starts at $350 a month for WordPress sites, with security scans, backups and weekday support, and bills additional services at $150 an hour.
Before you sign, get these answers in writing:
- How many hours of edits you get each month, and whether unused hours roll over.
- What counts as an edit and what counts as a paid project, like a new page.
- Whether hosting, the domain and email are in the price or billed separately.
- How fast they reply, and how you reach a person.
- What you keep if you cancel.
We cover ownership and exit terms in website subscription vs. buying outright.
Three ways to keep a 5-page site running, priced for a year
Here's the yearly math for a simple 5-page trade website, using the renewal prices above. Your numbers will be different, so use this as a template.
| Setup | What you pay for | Yearly total |
|---|---|---|
| DIY on a simple builder | Hostinger Premium at renewal ($131.88) + a .com ($11.08 to $34.99). You make every edit yourself. | $143 to $167, plus your time |
| Freelancer on call | Hosting at renewal ($119.88 to $131.88) + a .com ($11.08 to $34.99) + 6 hours of edits at an assumed $75 an hour ($450). | $581 to $617 |
| Monthly plan with edits | A care plan with unlimited edits ($179 x 12 = $2,148) + hosting at renewal + a .com. | $2,279 to $2,315 |
The DIY total is low because your time isn't on the bill. If an evening on the site means an estimate you didn't get to, count that too.
A plan without edits, like the $89 tier above, comes to about $1,200 a year once you add hosting and the domain. You'd still pay extra for each change.

When a few hundred a month is worth it
Our view: a 5-page trade website shouldn't cost hundreds of dollars a month just to stay online. The fixed bills in the table come to under $200 a year. Vladier sells a monthly plan ($99 or $199 a month, with hosting and edits included), so weigh our view with that in mind.
A bigger monthly bill makes sense when it pays for real work:
- You change services, prices or seasonal offers several times a year.
- Your site runs on WordPress with plugins, and you don't want to handle updates.
- You want one person to call when your quote form stops sending leads.
- An hour of your time on the site costs you more than the plan does.
Say your site barely changes and runs on a hosted builder. A plan that only promises "updates and monitoring" then charges you for work the builder already does. Pay for the builder and the domain, and hire help by the hour when you need it.
Before you pay for maintenance, check these five things
- Find your current bills: the domain's renewal date and price, and your hosting renewal price.
- Make sure the domain is registered to your business and set to auto-renew.
- Count the edits you actually asked for in the last 12 months.
- Price those edits by the hour and compare the total with a plan's yearly cost.
- If a plan still comes out ahead, get its edit hours, reply time and cancellation terms in writing.
