Is Hibu worth it for contractors? An honest look

What you get with Hibu

Hibu's main package is Hibu One. Its terms list listings management, review and reputation tools, a Smart Site website, lead tracking with call recording and AI call summaries, an inbox and a dashboard. Paid search, display, social and local ranking are add-ons ^[1].

Hibu's pricing page shows three tiers (Establish, Reach and Expand) and asks you to request custom pricing instead of listing prices ^[2]. The terms set a non-refundable $299 implementation fee for Hibu One ^[1].

What Hibu does well

• Strong reviews. Hibu scores 4.6 out of 5 across 870 Trustpilot reviews, and the summary praises account managers for prompt communication and expert guidance ^[3]. Trustpilot also labels Hibu as a company that asks customers for reviews. That's common practice, but worth knowing when you compare scores ^[3].
• BBB standing. Hibu has been BBB accredited since 2021 and holds an A+ rating ^[4].
• Done for you, with a review step. Hibu builds the site for your approval, shows it on a preview address and gives you five working days to send feedback before it goes live ^[1].
• A cooling-off period. If you buy over the phone, you get a 7-day review period and a full refund if you cancel within it ^[1].
• Ads and site under one roof. Hibu runs paid campaigns on Google, Facebook, Amazon, Bing and more ^[5].

The contract terms to understand before signing

According to Hibu's Digital Products and Services Terms and Conditions ^[1]:

• Minimum terms. 6 months for Hibu One, 12 months for a Hibu Smart Site, 6 months for Hibu Social and 12 months for Search with guaranteed clicks. Hibu's pricing FAQ says terms typically run 6 to 12 months ^[2].
• Renewal. After the minimum term, service continues month to month.
• No early exit. You can't cancel during the minimum term.
• Phone-only cancellation. Call (877) 237-6120, weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central, at least 15 days before the minimum term or current service month ends. Miss that and you're billed for another month.
• Refunds. Generally none when you cancel Hibu One or a Smart Site, outside the review period or a cancellation by Hibu.
• When billing starts. For Smart Sites, fees start the day after your consultation call, not when the site goes live.
• Price changes. After your minimum term, Hibu can change pricing, effective 14 days after it notifies you.

Who owns the website and the domain?

Hibu's terms say it owns the rights in the content it creates for you ^[1]. When you cancel, you get a lasting right to use the written copy Hibu wrote, but only if you paid for that service in full in advance. Videos Hibu makes for your site stay Hibu's ^[1].

If Hibu provides your domain, the Smart Site terms say it's registered to Hibu, and Hibu will help transfer it to your name if you ask. If you bring your own domain, you keep paying for it yourself, and you won't get the service's email mailbox features ^[1]. For most contractors, keeping the domain in your own name is the safer choice. You can check who holds yours on ICANN Lookup ^[7].

After you cancel, Hibu says it isn't responsible for storing your data or content, and backing it up is up to you ^[1].

What the complaints say

BBB lists 109 complaints closed in the last three years and 39 in the last 12 months, with order and service issues the most common ^[6]. Trustpilot's summary notes that some reviewers were unhappy with the ad approach, pointing to unmet expectations, unexpected billing and a lack of local communication ^[3]. A complaint count on its own doesn't tell you much, so read a few recent complaints from businesses in your trade and see whether the problems would matter to you.

Is Hibu a good fit for you?

Hibu tends to fit contractors who:

• Want managed paid ads, not just a website.
• Prefer a dedicated account manager and don't mind phone-based service.
• Can commit to a 6 to 12 month minimum and budget for the setup fee.

When to look elsewhere

• You mainly want a website you control and can take with you.
• You want published prices or month-to-month terms from day one.
• You'd rather cancel by email than by phone within a set window.

Questions to ask a Hibu rep before signing

• What's the total monthly price, the implementation fee and the minimum term for each service in my quote?
• Will my domain be registered in my business's name or Hibu's?
• Which content can I keep if I leave, and will I get the site files?
• When does billing start?
• What's my exact cancellation window, and will you confirm a cancellation in writing?

Already with Hibu and want to leave?

Work out when your minimum term ends (for Smart Sites it starts the day after your consultation call) and mark the date 15 days before it ^[1]. Back up your content and data, ask Hibu to transfer any domain it registered, and get your new site ready. Then call during business hours, ask for a written confirmation, and write down the date and the rep's name.

A different approach: see the site before you pay
